COINS - WW2 German Coins and Third Reich

The Third Reich started issuing clearly identifiable "Nazi" coins (ie with swastika) from 1936. Although
the Nazi's were in power from 1933, the designs for the smaller denomination coinage were simply a
continuation of "Weimarer Republik" designs. It was only from 1936 that the smaller denomination Third
Reich coins had the Nazi Reichsadler and Hakenkreuz (swastika) incorporated into the coin's design. Prior
to 1940, small denomination coins were minted from "superior" metals ie copper (1 & 2 Reichspfennig),
Copper/Aluminium Alloy (5 & 10 Reichspfennig), and depending upon the year either Nickel or Aluminium
(50 Reichspfennig). Things radically changed after the 1939 and the start of the Second World War
however. After 1939, no more large denomination silver coins were minted (2 and 5 Reichsmark). Smaller
denomination coins continued to be minted but no longer using the "superior" metals. From 1940, almost
all the small denomination coins were minted from an "inferior" zinc base metal. The exception to this
were 50 Reichspfennig coins which were instead minted from an aluminium

90% Silver! Minted in various designs between 1933 and 1939, the almost solid silver of the Nazi Third
Reich 5 Reichsmark coin epitimised status.

Though smaller and with a silver content of 62%, the 2 Reichsmark shares exactly the same design as its larger counterpart. Hindenburg on the face side with Nazi Reichseagle and swastika on the reverse. With the advent of war and the dramatic changes that followed, the Nazis could no longer afford to continue minting these coins. Silver was needed elsewhere. So both the 2 and 5 Reichsmark silver coins ceased production........

Hitler did not feature on any Nazi German coins (though he did figure on various
commemorative medallions). Place of prominence on the Third Reich's coins is given to the famous
World War One military general and later Reichspresident, Von Hindenburg.

"Gemeinnutz geht vor Eigennutz" translated to "The community comes before the individual".
Minted on the edge of all 3rd Reich silver Reichsmark coins, this perhaps typifies Nazi society.
And with it comes an understanding of how any concept of individual human "rights" was at odds
with the good of the collective.
