CHAINMAIL - shirts, vests, coif's etc

Chainmail, which should really be called mail, is a type of armour - also used in jewellery - consisting of small metal rings connected together in a flexible mesh.

Mail provided a highly efficient protection in the era of edged weapons.

Mail armour was invented sometime in the first millenium B.C. and was possibly invented simultaneously in Asia and Europe. We do not know exactly.

The earliest finds are from the 4th century B.C. from Romania. The Gauls and Romans are the first people who adopted it on a large scale.

The use of mail was widespread in the High Middle Ages, first as a total body protection and later to supplement plate armour.

Mail remained in use as a symbolic and ornamental item long after its practical use was past. It was used for the epaulettes of military uniforms and is still used in this way in the British Armed Forces.

Mail has also been used in jewellery when made very finely of silver or anodized and coloured metals. In Europe it was a popular material for ladies' purses in the early 20th century.
